Working women have rights
from The Manila Standard
July 10, 2003
A couple of days ago there was a news about the Anvil Ensembles majority of whose employees are women. Imagine, being unable to sleep for three straight days, go home for a week, which only means that they need to get some rest. Women workers are underpaid and they don't have job security. These women also don't receive the benefits that they are entitled to.
It makes one wonder why a lot of people particularly women still accept jobs inspite of working conditions. I think it is primarily due to extreme poverty among most of our fellow Filipinos. Employers should not take advantage of the workers who rely on them to provide jobs. The employers must realize that the workers are also human and they deserve to be treated as such.
I hope the government would see to it that a strong enforcement of existing labor laws should protect the right s of these workers.
