By playing up the story, "Sleepless in Sweatshop," last
July 3, 2003 the methods used by an unscrupulous businessman to keep his
employees awake with the use of a restricted drug, the PDI may be only
encouraging its use.
By naming the drug, using its likeness in the front page photo and giving
its purchase price, the paper most likely would be encouraging addicts all
over the country to try the drug with its cheaper-than-shabu price.
There are many unscrupulous local pharmacies who will sell this drug over
the counter. Case in point, the number of cough-syrup addicts who stay on
the steps of almost every LRT station.
Oh, yes, let us not forget, more unscrupulous businessmen who may try to
use the same method to force their employees to stay awake during rush
production deadlines.
The point is the drug should not have been named and there would still
have been a good headline and story. The PDI is already better than the
competition in content and in circulation, why did you not consider
holding back on certain information? Or is ethics now just another E word?
