Urge the Philippine Senate to pass the bill banning asbestos

November 20, 2009

A proposed law banning the importation, manufacture, processing or distribution in commerce of asbestos-containing products has been pending with the Senate Committee on Trade and Commerce since 29 August 2007.

The bill must pass the committee level so it can advance to the next legislative process, which is the plenary level. A similar bill was approved by the Committee on Health of the House of Representatives, the lower house in the bicameral Congress of the Philippines.

The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP), Associated Labor Unions (ALU) and Building and Woodworkers International (BWI) sent a position paper on asbestos ban and proposed amendments to the Senate Bill on 14 October 2009. TUCP, ALU and BWI need your support to move the Senate Bill forward.

Asbestos should/MUST be banned, the dangers it’s use have been known about for years,so Why is Canada still allowed to supply this stuff to the Philippines,Why doesn’t some-one in the Senate stand up and say “Enough is enough!”.
